Leaving a trace of ancestral traditions...
Photographic project of an artistic and cultural nature, the object of "CHANGEFACE" is to offer strong visual testimony with regards to "people abroad" that traditionally "change their faces" through ancestral traditions: scarifications, tatoos, piercings...
"CHANGEFACE" will be comprised of a number of reports, the first of which is a meeting with the "Battamariba" peoples living in the Atakora Mountains north of Benin. One of their traditions is the scarification of the face and the body.
The purpose of this project is to, over time, "compile" exceptional images that will be the object of expositions, publishing of a book, news publications...
Facial scarifications in Benin
The first component of the project unfolded in the Atakora Mountains north of Benin. The Battamaribas practice bodily scarification but particularly facial scarification since time immemorial.
Traditionally, the Battamariba lived in the nude. With the arrival of clothing, many began to abandon the scarification of the body. Attracted by the city and the Western way of life, young persons no longer wish to have their faces branded for life. The scarification tradition is being lost. The Battamariba that can exhibit this art are less and less numerous.
This first meeting was financed thanks to brand sponsors such as: the Double Sens travel agency, EdiLyFe, Manfrotto, Nanuk France, and Wacom as well as a crowdfunding campaign.
